For myself, I have thought about ending my life. Having a pet stopped me because I was worried about what would happen to them, how would they be taken care of. Pets give us purpose, hope and unconditional love. Even if we scold them, they’ll turn around and give us love. We benefit both physically and emotionally. Our spirits are lifted.
Dogs are trained to provide help in both ways I just mentioned and are called, service dogs. According to PsychCentral.com both humans and pets get Oxytocin which is a hormone that fosters the bond we develop with each other. They help increase our dopamine and serotonin. Unlike people who sometimes can’t or don’t give us unconditional love pets do. Some people have noticed positive changes in things such as blood pressure. So, it isn’t just emotional help we benefit from.
According to the American Heart Association it could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. They help with such things as stress because we can possibly get an increase in stress hormones otherwise. Remember always check with a professional on all things that can affect you or your loved ones. I have heard of how court rooms use pets sometimes to help children who may have to testify. It helps reduce their stress. Another physical benefit, you can have a walking companion.
Pets have been trained to come when called and they are carrying their owners’ medical supplies. You can get a therapy trained dog for emotional support. You are allowed to take them places such as airplanes where other dogs wouldn’t be allowed in the passenger area. Of course, dogs aren’t the only one who can provide us with support. People who love other animals find support from their love as well. Just find a local professional to get the proper advice when considering a pet especially for helping with physical needs. They can advise on the best emotional support dogs also.
